Your first dispensary visit, without the nerves.
Everyone at the counter was a first-timer once — including the budtenders. This is everything we'd tell a friend before their first visit: what to bring, how the menu works, and how to have a genuinely good time instead of a confusing one.
The whole visit in four steps
Bring your ID
21+ with any government photo ID (18+ medical). You'll show it at the door — everyone does, every time, even regulars.
Know your feeling, not your strain
You don't need to know products. 'Something relaxing that won't knock me out' is a perfect order. Budtenders translate feelings into jars all day.
Start low — you can always add
One or two puffs of flower, or 2.5–5 mg of an edible, is a real first dose. The rookie mistake isn't the wrong product; it's too much of the right one.

The menu, translated
Eight shelves, one plant. Here's what each format actually means for how fast it hits and how long it lasts.
| Format | Kicks in | Lasts | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flower & pre-rolls | Minutes | 1–3 hrs | The classic ritual; easy to dose puff by puff |
| Vapes | Minutes | 1–2 hrs | Convenience and discretion; no smoke, no smell lingering |
| Edibles & drinks | 45 min–2 hrs | 4–8 hrs | Long, steady experiences — patience required |
| Tinctures | 15–45 min | 2–6 hrs | Precise drops under the tongue; easy small doses |
| Concentrates | Seconds | 1–3 hrs | Experienced users; the strongest lane in the store |
| Topicals | Varies | Localized | Rub-in products; non-intoxicating |
Keep reading, keep smelling
Next stops on the learning path: the strain type guide (sativa vs. indica vs. hybrid vs. CBD), the terpene guide (why your nose is the best shopping tool you own), and the glossary for every word you'll hear at the counter.
First-timer questions, answered
- What do I need to buy cannabis in California?
- A valid government-issued photo ID showing you're 21 or older (18+ with a physician's recommendation for medical use). That's it — no membership, no doctor's note for adult use. Bring cash or debit; we also take Apple Pay and have an ATM on site.
- How much can I legally buy and carry?
- California adults 21+ can purchase and possess up to 1 ounce (28.5 g) of flower and 8 grams of concentrate per day. Keep it sealed in the trunk when driving, never consume in the car, and don't cross state lines with it.
- How long do edibles take to kick in?
- Typically 45 minutes to 2 hours, and they last much longer than smoking — often 4 to 8 hours. This delay is the #1 beginner trap: people re-dose at the 1-hour mark, then both doses land at once. Start at 2.5–5 mg THC and give it a full two hours before taking more.
- What should I ask the budtender?
- Just describe the evening you want: 'relaxed but functional,' 'sociable,' 'help me not think about work.' You don't need vocabulary — that's our job. Mention you're new and we'll keep doses gentle, and your first visit is 20% off.
- What if I get too high?
- It passes — usually within a few hours. Sit somewhere comfortable, hydrate, eat something, and ride it out; some people find CBD takes the edge off. Next time, halve the dose. Nobody has ever been permanently stuck on their couch, we promise.
